While these areas are remote, there is still the need for shipments into these areas.
When transporting goods across the border, there are two types of shipments. Shipments that originate in the United States and deliver in Canada or originate in Canada and delver to the United States are considered import shipments. Shipments that originate in the United States and travel through Canada to or from Alaska are In-Bond shipments.
Import shipments require a customs broker while In-bond shipments do not require a customs broker. We work with closely with customs brokers to ensure that import shipments have all the required documents in order before the transport truck arrives to the border. We work with our customers in advance to ensure that each shipment is properly classified and that all necessary forms are on file prior to arriving at the border. Delays at the border due to inaccurate or missing paperwork can be costly while the transport truck is delayed. Our experience with cross border shipments allows us to review the shipment, determine if any additional paperwork is necessary and submit the manifested cargo to Customers for pre-arrival clearance. Different commodities have different document requirements to clear customs.
In-bond shipments require a bond on file with CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency) . While there are thousands of transporation providers out there, not all of them can cross the border. Many transportation providers are unaware of the requirements to cross the border.
US based carriers may pick up in the US and deliver to Canada, pick up in Canada and deliver to the US and transport to and from Alaska. However, due to cabbatoge laws, a US based carrier may not pick up in Canada and deliver within Canada. The same is true for Candadian carriers. A Canada based carrier can pick up in Canada and deliver to the US or pick up in the US and deliver to the US, but may not pickup and deliver within the US, this includes picking up in the lower 48 and delivering to Alaska. The rules for cross border freight transportation are extensive and violating the rules can be a costly mistake.
